With Christmas just about upon us, it seems an ideal entry to recognize this classical piece of holiday music. Handel makes an excellent example of an aspect of Anglic culture, the acceptance of cultural and artistic contributions from other cultures and ready acceptance of others from other nations and peoples.

Handel was born in Germany and worked initially in Hamburg. He settled in London in 1712 and remained there for most of the rest of his life. Much of Handel’s styles are influenced by Italian and Germanic composers. So he brought not only his own Germanic self to England, but developed many fine compositions in English while being influenced by the Continent.
